Also in the Medieval Era: ladies shaving their legs and first-rate dental care for all
Morgana has not had half as much screen time as her storyline deserves. They’re painting her as evil, cold-hearted, and cruel, but she’s not. We saw that in the first two seasons. She’s cunning and ambitious, but she’s not evil. SO SHOW US WHY SHE ACTS AS SHE DOES. Explain why she’s so ready to kill her foster family. Explain what hardened her heart to her best friend. Explain how she found solidarity and empowerment with Morgause. God. Merlin and Arthur have comparatively little character progression relative to her, yet she gets so little screen time of her own. I’m kind of mad about this.
Also Gwen only gets screen time when it’s about Merlin or Arthur. Her dad dies? Oh, she’ll be okay after a day or two. No need to follow up on that. No need to show how she grieves. Her mistress, once her best friend, is a changed person and they are no longer on friendly terms? Psssh, why would you want to explore how she copes with that? Why would you want to give her a storyline other than her romance with Arthur? /sigh #women are not plot devices
Merlin’s constant moralizing is annoying as fuck. Murder is objectively, universally wrong~; meanwhile, he kills dozens of non-human sentient beings and several humans to boot. Morgana is an evil bitch because she’s willing to use harsher tactics to end the reign of a rage-driven, genocidal king. And nothing Merlin ever does can be wrong, except in retrospect. Christ.
But the show definitely got better in the third season. It’s still not the best show I’ve ever watched, but it’s much better than that godawful excuse for a first episode.
